  18. <p>     In the 19 years since the Bahamas gained independence from
  19. Britain, Lynden O. Pindling has been the only Prime Minister.
  20. But trouble in the economy, including a decline in tourism--the archipelago's main industry--ended all that. Challenger
  21. Hubert Ingraham, a market-oriented centrist, won 31 seats in the
  22. 49-member Parliament and the right to form a new government.

  26. <p>     China and South Korea announced that they will open formal
  27. diplomatic relations this week. Though South Korea remains a
  28. close U.S. ally, Seoul is also an increasingly important trading
  29. partner for Beijing. The rapprochement is likely to put more
  30. pressure on communist North Korea to reach peaceful agreements
  31. with Seoul. South Korean President Roh Tae Woo is expected to
  32. visit Beijing in October.
